What is a Board Meeting?

A Board Meeting is an annual or bi-annual gathering at which the board of directors of a firm evaluates its past performance, engages with strategic discussions, and adopts action plans to facilitate the expansion. The board of directors reviews reports on financials as well as human resources and management to decide on the direction the company will grow.

The agenda is created ahead of time prior to the board meeting to allow for an intelligent discussion on key issues, and to establish a clear timeline for each item. A boardroom system such as Lifesize’s OnBoard ensures that discussions are focused, efficient and maximize the time for each discussion.

It is important to start with the most important issues on the agenda, and then begin to work your way down. This will stop members from being overwhelmed by lengthy reports or items which are not relevant to the discussion. The meeting should be dedicated to discussing strategies and how to move forward.

Once the board has decided on a plan, it’s time to cast a vote. This is done through an unofficial ballot, with the Chairman overseeing the process of voting and tallying the votes. Transparency and objectivity is important and it is essential to have a neutral person watching the voting process. It is also beneficial to have an independent director who isn’t involved with your business on the board.
